Every other legal page here answers a question about us. This one answers a question about you: what has this site written onto my device — and can I take it back? So we keep minutes, and you can strike a line out of them.

In one breath

A cookie is a small file this site asks your browser to keep, so it can recognise your browser the next time it sees it. Throughout this page we use “cookie” as shorthand for the whole family: cookies, local storage, session storage, pixels and tags — anything written to, or read from, your device. European law treats them all the same way, and so do we.

Some of them have to exist or the site stops working: they keep you signed in, remember which language you chose, remember that you already answered the consent banner, and let the firewall tell you apart from an attack. Everything else is configured to wait for your yes.

We set this site up so that nothing beyond the strictly necessary is written before you say yes.

That is a statement about how we have configured this site, not a guarantee about every browser in the world — software changes, third parties change their own behaviour, and no automated check is perfect. Which is exactly why we would rather you tested it than trusted it.

    How to read this register. It describes this website as we have configured it at the version date below. Names, purposes and lifetimes for services we do not operate are taken from those providers’ own documentation and from our scans; providers change them without notifying us, and automated scanning tools — ours included — are not always complete or correct. What you actually see can differ depending on your browser, extensions, device, region, whether you are signed in, and what you have consented to. Lifetimes are as documented or configured; browsers may shorten them independently. Where this register and the site disagree, the site governs, and we want to hear about it.

    Two numbers, not one: how long the cookie lives on your device, and how long the data derived from it is kept — these are different settings and we publish both. In Belgium there is no “analytics is essential” exemption — our regulator does not recognise one — so statistics wait for your yes even where other countries treat this more loosely. Both providers are established in the United States; transfers rest on an adequacy decision and/or standard contractual clauses. Neither is loaded, and neither receives anything, until you agree.

    These switches are the consent tool itself, not a copy of it — they write to the same record the banner writes, so there is only ever one truth about what you chose. Granting takes effect at once. Withdrawing stops anything further and takes full effect on your next page view: a script already running in this page cannot always be recalled mid-flight, which is why we ask before loading rather than after.

    If you refuse — what actually breaks

    You refuse statistics
    Nothing changes for you. We lose the ability to see which article failed and which course lost people at lesson three. That is our problem, not yours.
    You refuse embedded video
    Course films and interviews show a placeholder with a play button. Pressing it asks you once, then plays. Transcripts, where they exist, work either way.
    You never set a preference
    Nothing is stored, and nothing breaks. If you do set one and later clear it, the site forgets your language between visits and comment forms stop pre-filling. It simply asks again.
    You block everything, including strictly necessary
    Sign-in stops working, and the banner reappears on every page because the record of your answer is itself one of the things you blocked.
